Essential Skills of Communicating

There is no better time than the present to reinforce the communication skills of your supervisors, team leaders and managers. Effective communication is truly one of the most fundamental and essential skills your organization's leaders need to master and demonstrate in day to day action. In fact, your organization might be experiencing situations or problems as a result of poor communication as the root cause.

More than 85 percent of issues in the workplace are rooted in poor communication. For example, consider the following scenario:

As you read this scenario please think and ask yourself , could this happen here at our firm , is it happening right now and if yes , what are we going to do about it ?

Department A didn't communicate with Department B when it initiated a new procedure. Supervisor B is unhappy with Supervisor A for failing to give her a heads up about the new procedure. In addition, Supervisor B's staff wonders why she didn't communication with them about the new procedure.

Meanwhile, Supervisor A's team doesn't understand why Team B isn't holding up their end of the project. Both teams are unhappy with their supervisors and are grumbling among themselves. Team A and Team B want to approach their supervisors, but the supervisors haven't been approachable lately, and they haven't sought their employees' input in the past, so the teams continue to spin their wheels.

Supervisor A and Supervisor B both neglect to pick up on the nonverbal cues their teams are sending and are slow in taking action.

Loss of productivity ensues. And all this occurred within a two-week period. The result may be a long-lasting loss of productivity and poor morale. Situations like these provide fuel for actively disengaged employees to gossip about while engaged employees may begin to wonder : " Does anyone around here know how to play this game ? "

The root problem was poor communication. It may seem simple enough, but this type of situation happens all too often in all types of organizations.

One of our learning programs the Essential Skills of Communicating, is an outstanding course designed to teach managers, supervisors and team leaders to communicate clearly and effectively in the organization. The highly interactive workshop provides experiences that teach leaders the following key skill points:

How to design and communicate clear, concise messages
How to look for and recognize nonverbal cues
How to listen to communicate
How to use feedback on a timely basis to overcome communication barriers and set the team(s) moving again

By implementing a learning process to assist managers, supervisors and team leaders communicate effectively with employees, organizations can prevent communication pitfalls and reap the rewards of employees who feel they are an important part of the company. This program is one of many we offer that supports employee engagement and is available in workshop , on-line and blended format and can be facilitated by one of our people who by someone from your organization.
