I Want To Be In Charge So I Can Make A Difference "
Only yesterday I thought of a great old adage that says " You've got to keep on getting better if you want to keep being good " .
And to that end , like you perhaps , I keep reading books in my area of intended expertise to keep getting better. Last night I was reading a , what I feel so far to be brilliant book titled " Built To Serve " by Dan Saunders and published by McGraw Hill. The book is subtitled " How to Drive the Bottom Line with People - First Practices " .
Dan Saunders is the CEO of the award - winning , service - oriented United Supermarkets chain founded and located mainly in Texas.
A piece that i read was so profound for me that I wanted to share it with you simply hoping that it might make a positive difference in how you and the folks you work with interact with and inspire your staff.
I'll make it brief:
Dan Saunders writes that on a visit to one of United's stores a new employee approached him. " Mr. Saunders " he said , " this is my first day on the job , and I want to introduce myself. "
They spent only a short amount of time getting acquainted before the new young man asked an interesting question :
" How long do you think it will be before I'm promoted to store director ? "
Saunders responded with "That's an interesting question . Why do you ask ? "
His answer was an epiphany for Dan Saunders . " I want to be in charge so i can make a difference. "
I thought isn't it great that this new worker want's to make a difference some day.
As Saunders thought about his comment he wondered what he and his leadership staff had done in their culture to lead people , young and old, to believe that they must climb to the top of an organization before they can make a difference.
Dan Saunders went on to explain to the new worker that people can make a difference in an organization , regardless of position or salary, as long as they grasp the organization's vision and mission .
So that's it , food , I trust, for thought for you and your organization , and its people.
