Talent Retention in 2010
Talent Retention in 2010
Retaining top talent should continue to be a top strategy for businesses in 2010. Organizations have been struggling to balance economic challenges while planning for the economic rebound that is reportedly just around the corner. This has been especially true with how leaders are making decisions about training. Training is one of the keys to employee engagement and retention. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) has published its annual report on the factors that HR professionals consider most important in determining employee job satisfaction. It probably comes as no surprise that job security is at the top of the list. Other "very important" factors include the following: • Opportunities to use skills and abilities • Relationship with the immediate supervisor • Management's recognition of employee job performance • Communication between employees and senior management • Overall corporate culture • Contribution of work to organization's business goals • Job-specific training • Organization's commitment to professional development • Career development opportunities Optimism is growing, although cautiously, about how economic recovery for the world can spur recovery for the jobless. This will have an effect on recruiting and wage trends. Some forecasters predict that hiring will pick up earlier than expected. The current economic conditions have changed the way we do business, and analysts predict this may have a lasting, even positive, influence on business efficiency and employee satisfaction. If you have employees who have been waiting out the storm before seeking another job, then you need to learn how you can retain your top talent. While some companies are swirling with a lack of direction in how to retain employees, other executives are investing their time in reinforcing the employee-company relationship and in training to secure employee engagement and commitment. A poll of executive HR leadership indicates that the most critical issues during the recession --- aside from financial stability --- include talent management and staffing, employee engagement, and employee morale. A majority of those polled are expanding their strategies to develop talent and retain those individuals after the recession lifts. Communication Strategy can help you retain your top employees. Retaining Winning Talent is an interactive workshop that focuses on team leaders and their power to influence engagement and thus retention of key team members. The program provides skills, tools and a research-based approach that help team leaders rate the attrition risk of each team member, identify individual team member's retention needs, increase the level of commitment from each team member, and, most importantly, develop and implement a retention action plan designed to increase retention for the entire team. Geoff Colvin, senior editor-at-large for Fortune magazine, told executives at an October strategy conference, "The best companies reset their priorities for the new world we are about to enter."
